Frequently Asked Questions

To help you have a wonderful opera experience, we’ve put together answers to our most commonly asked questions – and more! Simply read on or click on a link for in-depth information.

Where can I learn more about the opera I'm attending?
On our website, simply click on the opera you are interested in and you can read a synopsis of the story, learn about the cast, go to the General Director’s blog for information about how singers are selected and other inside information.

What opera courtesies should I be aware of?
One of the most unique and amazing aspects of opera is that the music is not amplified. The orchestra is not electronically enhanced and the singers do not use microphones. Because of this, audience noise is easily heard and can disrupt enjoyment of the opera.

So, for the enjoyment of the entire audience, Toledo Opera asks your cooperation with the following policies:

    1. Late-comers will be seated at the first intermission.
    2. Please TURN OFF cell phones, watches and other electronic equipment (or set ringer to vibrate).
    3. Please unwrap throat lozenges/candy before the opera.
    4. Please do not bring children under the age of six to any opera performance. Click here to learn more about our Education programs for students in grades K-5.

Please also be aware that taking photos, videos, audio recordings or any other electronic copying of a performance is prohibited.

Are there good restaurants nearby?
A listing of nearby restaurants is available HERE.

What to wear?
Elegance is appropriate any night! But, at any performance, men also wear business suits, sport coats and slacks and yes, even jeans. Women wear anything from casual clothes to business suits or cocktail dresses.

Are there any opera events I can participate in?
Parties, Fundraisers & Events are held throughout the year. Check the Events menu at the top of the page for a listing of upcoming events.
